Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, have reportedly met with the WNBA in hopes of a potential expansion franchise. Adam Schefter claims that the pair are looking into this possibility to increase their sports ownership in the region.
The Mahomes’ have various sports ownership groups. In 2020, the NFL star joined the Kansas City Royals ownership group and owns a minority stake in the MLB franchise.
In the subsequent year, Mahomes joined the ownership group of the MLS team Sporting Kansas City.
The exceptional quarterback also has ownership stake in women’s soccer. He joined the NWSL’s Kansas City Current in 2023. This time, the couple wants to raise money to start a professional women’s basketball team in the city where he plays.

Fans were surprised to see this update for the Mahomes, creating a buzz online. Here are some of what the fans said on X (formerly Twitter).
“I could 1000% see Caitlin playing there,” one fan wrote.
“Man I was literally just thinking about a wnba team in KC,” another fan posted.
“I’m surprised KC doesn’t have an NBA basketball team a women’s one might do decently well,” a fan said.
Other fans have started to credit Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.
“Ok I’ll def make the drive (to see Caitlin play) KC is fun bro🤞,” one fan said.

“Caitlin Clark is there in 4 years. I bet she would want to own a team one day herself, though. She would love to play for the 2 Mahomes in future,” another fan said.
Kathy Nelson, CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission, expressed her excitement about potentially adding a women’s basketball team.
“I certainly think what you see with the KC Current, I think that ownership group works so well, it could certainly be the perfect ownership group for a future WNBA franchise,” Nelson said.

WNBA Commissioner looks to add more teams in the league
The WNBA will introduce a new team in 2025, the Golden State Valkyries. Apart from that, there hasn’t been any talk about another expansion team in the league.
That is until the Mahomes created a buzz by proposing a Kansas City-based women’s basketball team.
According to Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, she hopes to expand the league and maybe reach 16 teams by 2028. Cities such as Toronto and Portland are already expected to be involved in the expansion in the next few years.
