Dave Portnoy couldn’t contain his excitement as he watched Caitlin Clark break another WNBA record against the Dallas Wings on Sunday.
Dave Portnoy had a very simple response on social media as he watched Caitlin Clark make more history, this time against the Dallas Wings. In the penultimate game of the 2024 WNBA season, Clark had an impressive showing, scoring 35 points on 10-of-22 shooting from the field, including nailing 6 of 14 3-point attempts.
She also had eight assists and two rebounds in the 110-109 win. Though her 35 points were pivotal in helping the Indiana Fever squeeze by the Wings, Clark’s outing was notable for another reason as well.
Clark broke the WNBA record for most points scored by a rookie in a single season, surpassing WNBA legend Simone Augustus’ mark of 744 that was set in 2006. As of writing, the Fever rookie has 761 points scored on the season, only 39 points away from reaching 800 points in a single season.
Considering how the Fever already has a spot in the WNBA playoffs, it stands to reason that Indiana head coach Christie Sides would not risk playing Clark heavy minutes in the final game of the season, especially if there is little to no reason to do so.
With the Fever in the playoffs and with Clark setting the record for most points scored by a rookie, Portnoy couldn’t help but give a five-word statement on the 22-year-old’s exploits. On X, the Barstool Sports boss simply put: “Caitlin Clark is going bonkers!!!”
Caitlin Clark broke the record for most points scored by a rookie in a single season
Portnoy’s support of Clark has been apparent since the star guard made her way to the league as the No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Whenever Rookie of the Year was the topic of conversation, Portnoy often backed Clark because of his immense belief in the rookie.
At one point, Portnoy even called out NFL fans for choosing to watch football during the same time Clark and the Fever took on the Minnesota Lynx. “Honestly only a fool would watch the NFL over Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever right now,” Portnoy declared on X. “It’s poetry in motion. It’s art. It’s beauty. Makes me want to cry tears of joy watching them right now.”
What’s more, Portnoy was so confident in Clark and the Fever’s chances to win the WNBA title that he placed a $100,000 wager on Indiana in early August. If the Fever wins the championship, Portnoy would be awarded $10 million, considering that the Fever had +10000 odds to win the title.
“Caitlin Clark is a top 3 player in the league. Maybe the best. She got rest for the 1st time in a year,” Portnoy shared, with a screenshot of his wager. “Aliyah Boston and her chemistry grow every game. They started 1-8. 10-7 since then and improving. I had to do it.”
