A five-time WNBA All-Star and future Hall of Famer has made a pitch to the Indiana Fever to sign her so she can assist rookie star Caitlin Clark.
One of the main storylines early in the 2024 WNBA season has been the stunning amount of hits and cheap shots opposing teams have delivered on Caitlin Clark. Officials have also missed many clear-cut fouls committed by other teams while defending the Iowa product.
That controversy hit another level on Saturday when Chennedy Carter of the Chicago Sky delivered a cheap shot to Clark after making a two-point basket late in the third quarter. The officials initially issued only a standard foul, but the WNBA later upgraded it to a flagrant foul.
During an interview with TMZ Sports, WNBA legend and free agent Angel McCoughtry made a pitch for a team to sign her. McCoughtry added she’d love to play with the Fever, where she could provide valuable support for Caitlin Clark:
“Someone sign me! I’ll make sure, I’m a vet and I’ll make sure I defend and do what I gotta do…I would love to play on a team that can contest for a championship or be a vet to help the young ones…like Caitlin Clark. She needs that vet around her arm just pushing her through the season.”
The 37-year-old McCoughtry last played for the Minnesota Lynx in 2022, averaging 18.6 points, five rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. She won back-to-back scoring titles in 2012 and 2013 and earned WNBA All-Defensive First Team honors seven years in a row from 2010 to 2016.
The rebuilding Fever could certainly use veteran experience and leadership to help Clark navigate through an adventurous rookie year. We’ll see if anyone takes McCoughtry up on her offer.
Caitlin Clark Is Off To A Strong Start In The Pros
Though she has limited support around her in Indiana right now, Clark has quickly cemented herself as one of the top players in the WNBA.
The 22-year-old is averaging 15.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game over her first 11 games. She has scored 20-plus points five times, including a career-high 30 points against the Los Angeles Sparks on May 28.
