Kelsey Mitchell could depart the Gainbridge FieldHouse after becoming a free agent but she might not be the only one leaving.
The Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark could be set to be dealt a double-blow with two star players set to quit the organization despite their successful 2024 season that saw them reach the WNBA Playoffs First Round.
Clark starred alongside Kelsey Mitchell and NaLyssa Smith throughout the campaign but the trio could soon be broken up with Mitchell destined for free agency whilst Smith seems to be locked in a dispute with the franchise.
Smith, the 6ft 4in forward of the team, produced 10.6 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game but failed to post a single point in the Fever’s first playoffs appearance since 2016, although she was only given 13 minutes of action compared to 24.8 in the regular season.
Following that, she took any links to the Fever out of her social media video and posted a message that fans have interpreted as a farewell from the Gainbridge FieldHouse which was also exacerbated following a cryptic message.
The Fever posted a video of Smith reflecting on her 2024 season in which she says, “I have so much more to accomplish,” clearly feeling that she fell below her targets or wasn’t appreciated in the way she expected as fans expect the 24-year-old to be traded.
One user posted to X.com, formerly Twitter, “Time to trade Smith to the Sun.”
A second added, “Unfortunately it will be with another time.”
A third wrote, “You do have more to accomplish! Tune out the negative in all areas of your life.”
Where could Smith be traded to and why are fans okay with it?
Despite averaging 10.6 points and 7.1 rebounds, Fever’s fans are not at all opposed to Smith packing her bags and heading to new pastures, with the Connecticut Sun being the favorite name mentioned.
However, for Fever fans this has nothing to do with Smith’s talents or that she would be a good fit for their playing style, it’s to do with a video the youngster made with her girlfriend, DiJonai Carrington.
“Ow, you poked me in the eye,” Carrington said in a video on Instagram with Smith, who apologized, and the two laughed. Carrington then added, “Did you do it on purpose?”
During Game 1 of the Suns-Fever playoffs clash, Carrington clearly poked Clark in the eye but wasn’t called for a flagrant foul and showed no sympathy to the 22-year-old as she was left crumbled on the floor.
So Fever fans were already mad about that but now a video between Carrington and Smith appears to show them joking about the moment which has pushed the respect of the Fever fans into irredeemable territory so they want her gone.
