Bronny James and father, LeBron James

Bronny James interacted with the media as part of the 2024 NBA draft Combine. In a video released on Friday, Bleacher Report asked the guard, who is named after his father, if he would also continue the tradition and name his son LeBron James III.

The $3.7 million NIL-valued (per On3) Bronny immediately refused it and said:

“Absolutely not!”

Bronny James is not the only one feeling about his name in this manner, as LeBron James once said in 2018 on the debut episode of the HBO series, The Shop:

“I still regret giving my 14-year-old my name.”

Bronny James is focused on making a name for himself

Despite sharing the name with his famous father, Bronny James shared in an interview that his focus now is to create a name for himself and join the NBA.

“My dream has always just been to put my name out, make a name for myself and get to the NBA. Bronny was just a nickname that I was just given when I was younger. But everything that follows my dad, people just try to link me with that and all the greatness that he’s achieved.

“I haven’t done anything yet, so I feel like there needs to be that divide between Bronny and LeBron. Everyone’s heard this before. I just want to have people know my name is Bronny James and not being identified as just LeBron James’ son. I feel like that would great.”

He may be well on his way of achieving his dreams as James’ prospects rose exceptionally during the NBA Combine. He impressed scouts with his 3-point shooting (19-from-25) and his 40.5″ max vertical.

Although he underperformed during the first scrimmage, scoring just four points and four rebounds, he retrieved himself in the final 5v5 play, where he scored a team-high 13 points.

According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, Bronny has improved his draft stock immensely, moving spots from the outliers to come up in the middle.

“He’s (Bronny) moved into the late second round of our latest projections. We’re gonna have him at 54 in our next update. That’s all the way up from the back end of the top 100. Talking to NBA people out here, they feel like he’s legitimized himself as a real NBA prospect.”

Bronny James has maintained his college eligibility despite declaring for the draft and he has until May 29 to forgo his eligibility or withdraw from the draft. The 2024 NBA draft will be held on June 26 and 27.
