Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese is not happy.
With additional focus on the racism some WNBA fans showed during the regular season and the league’s playoffs, the Chicago Sky star decided to say her peace on the situation.
Angel Reese responded to a conversation about the racist slurs some players have faced and said she has “been going through this for the last two years.” She also said the media has “benefited from my pain” in order “to create a narrative.”
Reese made it clear that she started her podcast “to take my voice back” and said that “something has to change.”
“Y’all know I’ve been going through this for the last two years but was told ‘save the tears’ and ‘stop playing victim,’” Reese said. “Y’all a little late to the party and could have tried to put out this fire way before it started.”
Angel Reese continued:
“I’ve never in my life had privilege, but I definitely know the power I have through my platform. That didn’t come overnight. I grew that on my OWN. With that being said, I will continue to use my voice in the right way & say what’s right even though it has backfired on me to be this “villain.” I won’t stop!!”
“For the past two years, the media has benefited from my pain & me being villainized to create a narrative. They allowed this. This was beneficial to them. I sometimes share my experiences of things that have happened to me but I’ve also allowed this to happen to me for way too long and now other players in this league are dealing with & experiencing the same things. This isn’t ok at all. Anything beyond criticism about playing the game we love is wrong. I’m sorry to all the players that have/continue to experience the same things I have…. This is why I started my podcast. To take my voice back and create the narrative of who I really am. At the end of the day, I don’t want an apology nor do I think this will ever stop but something has to change…”
The initial post from Angel Reese was in response to the ESPN segment, but her comments appear to be directed toward the WNBA as a whole after they finally decided to speak out once Connecticut Sun All-Star Alyssa Thomas specifically called out fans of the Indiana Fever for making racist remarks during their recently completed playoff series.
Thomas said she had never in her 11-year pro career “experienced the racial comments (like) from the Indiana Fever fan base.”
Angel Reese Previously Called Out Caitlin Clark’s Fan Base
Angel Reese said what she wanted to say in her podcast debut earlier this month at the expense of Caitlin Clark fans.
In the first episode of her podcast, the Sky rookie discussed her personal history with fans of Caitlin Clark. While she did not criticize the Fever star, she had to call out the fans for their behavior toward her.
It all began when Angel Reese made the celebratory gesture of pointing to her ring finger in Clark’s face during the final minutes of LSU’s NCAA title win over Clark and Iowa in the 2023 championship game.
It was a moment that Reese says, “changed my life forever.”
“I think it’s really just the fans, her fans, the Iowa fans, now the Indiana fans, that are really just, they ride for her, and I respect that, respectfully. But sometimes it’s very disrespectful. I think there’s a lot of racism when it comes to it,” Reese said.
Reese added she has received death threats and experienced people coming right to her home.
She even stated some fans had made AI-generated images of her, depicting her without clothes on, and sent them to her family members.
