Dawn Staley becomes the first black coach to lead a Division I team to an undefeated season

Dawn Staley guided South Carolina to a perfect 2023-24 season, capping it off with an 87-75 win over the Caitlin Clark-led Iowa Hawkeyes in the final.

The Philadelphia-born coach, who also played in the WNBA, made history as she became the first black coach to lead a team to an undefeated season in Division I college basketball.

Aside from coaching the Gamecocks to an undefeated season, Staley won her third straight Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year and her second Associated Press Women’s Coach of the Year. She discussed the challenges of the season upon receiving the award:

“To be undefeated, to win awards like this—so unexpected. I welcome it. There are plenty of times where I think we should have won a national championship, but we didn’t. This is somewhat of a repayment when you get stuff that you really don’t expect to get.”

She also thanked this year’s rival, Caitlin Clark, for helping women’s basketball to grow exponentially with her exciting play. The former WNBA star expects the No. 1 overall pick to lift the league like what she did in women’s collegiate basketball.
