"It felt like a perfect fit": UConn commit Liam McNeeley makes huge prediction for Dan Hurley's Huskies

On Friday, 2024 top 10 recruit Liam McNeeley announced his commitment to the UConn Huskies. This comes one month after he asked for the release of his letter of intent from Indiana Hoosiers.

McNeeley spoke more in detail to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. He explained the reason for choosing Dan Hurley’s team as:

“It felt like a perfect fit. Coach Hurley is a hard-nosed coach. That’s the kind of coach I thrive under. The offensive system they run is perfect for my game. The culture of the team, the sets they run. They are going to help me get better on both sides of the ball. The whole coaching staff are good people.”

After a successful high school season, the five-star recruit hopes to translate his performance in the collegiate level as well.

“My main goal is to win a national championship,” McNeeley said via ESPN. “UConn is on a roll right now. They’ve gone back-to-back, so there’s no reason we can’t contend for a three-peat.”

“UConn has won without five-stars. They’ve developed their players and made it work no matter what. That’s what I’m expecting next year.”

Liam McNeeley comes with championship-game experience

Liam McNeeley averaged 12.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists through 33 games in his senior season at Montverde Academy.

Along with fellow top recruit Cooper Flagg, McNeeley led Montverde to its undefeated season, culminating in the Chipotle High School Nationals championship win.

The 6-foot-7 small forward is an elite shooter, especially from the three-point range. He went 68-for-155 (43.9 percent) from deep during his final season in school.

“I definitely progressed throughout this season,” McNeeley said. “The whole staff at Montverde and Coach [Kevin] Boyle pushed me to be more than just a shooter. My teammates trusted me to make big plays in big games. I hope that carries on to UConn now.”

McNeeley and the others will replace an extremely talented roster at UConn, which had Donovan Clingan and Stephon Castle, who both declared for the NBA draft and Cam Spencer and Tristen Newton, who exhausted their college eligibility.

Coach Hurley had promised a three-peat for fans during the victory parade after the championship win. Fans are now curious to see how he will achieve it with most of his starting five gone.
