Make Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United boss for the FA Cup final and save the club’s season.

That’s what talkSPORT host and big United fan Andy Goldstein wants to see happen having had enough of a dismal season, which culminated in a miserable 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Current manager Erik ten Hag is seemingly clinging on to his job, with many fans phoning talkSPORT to express their exasperation with the team. However, talkSPORT understands that despite the poor results no decision will be made on the Dutchman’s future until after the FA Cup final, which sees United face Manchester City.

Mark Goldbridge thinks the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have ‘mugged off’ Manchester United in the transfer market over recent years

But that would be the wrong move, according to talkSPORT Drive’s Goldstein, who told co-host Darren Bent the club requires a drastic change to stand any chance of beating their near rivals at Wembley.

And he suggested a radical move to bring back their greatest ever manager Ferguson, now 82 , for one game only to lead the team out.

“I know people are going to say this is bonkers but it is not bonkers,” Goldstein said.

“Manchester United for the FA Cup final against Manchester City should have in that dressing room to give the speech – Sir Alex Ferguson.

“That gives Manchester United the best chance to beat Man City.”

Bent could not believe his ears, replying: “You’re bringing back someone that has not managed for ten years, for one game – arguably your biggest game. Why would you bring Fergie back for that?”

Goldstein insisted: “He has got something that no one else has. Just by walking into a room, he has it. Even now.

“Imagine you’re Marcus Rashford sitting there as a player, I don’t know where he is mentally or physically. Does he want to play down the left? I don’t know.

“But what I do know is as a Manchester United player born and bred, who knows exactly how important Sir Alex Ferguson is, Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo as well.

“You bring Sir Alex Ferguson into that dressing room at Wembley against Man City and Fergie gives that speech (clap), United have got every chance.”

A blunt Bent said: “That’s bonkers.”

Ferguson won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and the Champions League twice. He retired in 2013, which was the last time the club were crowned champions of England.

While the chances of Fergie dropping in to take over on one game for the FA Cup final is highly unlikely, Goldstein is not the only talkSPORT presenter to believe a change is needed.

On the Sports Bar Jamie O’Hara told Jason Cundy that Jose Mourinho should be brought back until the end of the season, with games against Arsenal, Newcastle and Brighton to come before Man City.

The former Tottenham and Wolves midfielder said: “Give it to Mourinho for a couple of weeks. Why not?

“A chance to win a trophy… they ain’t winning it with Ten Hag, forget about that. They’re done.” One fan phoned the Sports Bar to suggest former captain Roy Keane is given the job until the end of the season.

For now, though, it’s Ten Hag until the summer.
