The Buffalo Bills have released one of the few Super Bowl-winning players from their roster ahead of Sunday’s Divisional Round clash with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Per ESPN’s Field Yates, the Bills have released Super Bowl 55 champion and running back Leonard Fournette from their roster. The Bills signed the 2017 first-round pick to their practice squad back on Oct. 30.
Fournette suited up for five games during the regular season, but he only saw 12 carries that went for 40 yards. Second-year running back James Cook broke out as the Bills’ leading rusher with 1,122 yards, while dual-threat signal-caller Josh Allen picked up 524 yards on the ground and a team-leading 15 rushing scores.
Even No. 2 running back Latavius Murray has fared well as Cook’s backup, rushing for 300 yards and four touchdowns on 79 carries.
Fournette has a reputation for being a clutch postseason performer, hence the “Playoff Lenny” nickname. He has 604 rushing yards and nine rushing scores in nine career postseason games, having scored four total touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Super Bowl 55 championship run.
But unless another team picks up Fournette over the next few days, it looks like the legend of “Playoff Lenny” will be put on hiatus, at least for one year.
The Bills host the Chiefs at 6:30 p.m. EST at Highmark Stadium on Sunday.
