The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly set to release a wide receiver following their Super Bowl win earlier this month.

Despite establishing themselves as an NFL dynasty with their latest championship win, the Chiefs aren’t immune to roster cuts. As such, they’re letting a wide receiver go, though it’s hardly who you’d think.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler is reporting that the team is releasing veteran WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling in a bid to save money. The move will save them $12 million.

The wideout signed a three-year deal worth $30 million with the Chiefs in 2022. He made a meager 42 receptions in his first season and only pulled in half of that last term. He had a greater impact during the playoffs, having registered 116 yards on six receptions in the AFC Championship win over the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022. He also scored the team’s first touchdown in this year’s Super Bowl 58.

The Chiefs are clearly of the view that they could get a cheaper receiver who could be just as productive.

The early release also works for the player as he will have an edge in free agency given that he will be available before the window opens.
