The Super Bowl is the latest NFL event to head to the home of gambling in Las Vegas.

Being in the biggest gambling center in the world has meant that the NFL felt the need to remind players of certain elements of its gambling policy.

The league has long maintained that players are not allowed to bet on NFL events. Their 2023 gambling policy states that players can never place, solicit, or facilitate a bet — either directly or through a third party — on “any NFL game, practice, or other event, such as the Combine or Draft.”

The overall NFL gambling policy has evolved over time as different situations and circumstances arose. That includes this week.

The NFL and NFL Players Association are in agreement that the prohibition on players on the 49ers and Chiefs gambling ends as soon as the game comes to an end on Sunday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. They can literally walk off the field and head to a casino on the strip without fear of backlash or suspension.

It should be noted that no one in the NFL is ever allowed to bet on the NFL. Many sportsbooks are already offering bets on the 2024 season which means not a single active player on any team in the National Football League can bet on it.

Unlike the Chiefs and 49ers players, all other 30 teams are free to play blackjack, craps, or even slots right now. There is a provision for players to be allowed to pass through sportsbooks for access to other areas of the hotel, but the long and short of it is that an NFL player should not be seen in a sportsbook this week.
