Florida police have released a statement following the shocking and tragic death of former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis.

Davis, who passed away at the age of 35, was found dead at his home in Southwest Ranches, Florida on Monday, with the Miami Herald’s Daniel Oyefusi and Grethel Aguila breaking the news.

Authorities are investigating the death, though foul play is not suspected.

Stephen Holder of ESPN has shared a statement from Davie Police which reads:

“This morning, Davie Police Officers responded to 6051 SW 178th Avenue in reference to a medical call. Officers were called to the residence by the house assistant, who found the homeowner deceased.

“We can confirm that the deceased individual is Vontae Davis age 35. Preliminary information suggests that foul play is not involved.

“The investigation remains ACTIVE.”

Vontae Davis Played In The NFL For 10 Years

Vontae Davis spent most of his 10-year NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts. He was with the team for over six years, making 76 appearances, and was a Pro Bowler in both 2014 and 2015.

The former NFL star had a great college career at Illinois, where he was a two-time first-team All-Big 10 call-up who helped the Fighting Illini reach the Rose Bowl in 2007 for the first time since 1983.

Davis started in the pros with the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him as the 25th overall pick in 2009. He spent his last season with the Buffalo Bills, ending it by exiting a game against the Los Angeles Chargers before leaving football altogether.

He later said it was “one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life, honestly.“

Davis played in 121 games, registering 395 tackles, 22 interceptions, and 97 passes defended.

Of the way he ended his career abruptly, Davis said the decision was the correct one at the time because his heart wasn’t in football like it had been before.
