BREAKING: The NFL Is Officially Changing The Trade Deadline /d

NFL owners voted on a lot of things at the owners meeting and one of them had to do with the trade deadline.

The NFL’s trade deadline will be pushed back one week in 2024. The league announced on Tuesday that this year’s deadline will fall on the Tuesday following Week 9, which is November 5th.

The deadline had been one week earlier in previous years, and a December report indicated a change was unlikely.

However, teams like the Cleveland Browns and others proposed that it should be pushed back two weeks to accommodate the expansion of the regular season to 17 games and quite possibly when it moves to eighteen games.

“Officially: The NFL trade deadline has been moved to the Tuesday after Week 9 games,” NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said.

Several clubs proposed pushing the trade deadline even further, which was past Week 10, but that proposal failed as the league decided post-Week 9 was a better option for the deadline.

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry submitted that Week 10 proposal and it was supported by the Detroit Lions, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders. However, it was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ proposal to push it back one week that garnered the three-fourths approval needed to pass.

The Tuesday following Week 8 has been the NFL trade deadline since 2012. Teams this season will have until November 5 at 4 p.m. ET to complete any transactions before the start of the second half of the regular season.

NFL Owners have Approved A Ton of New Rules Aside From The Movement of The Trade Deadline

Aside from the NFL trade deadline being moved to past Week 9, NFL owners were quite busy voting and approving a number of things.

NFL team owners on Monday unanimously approved a rule that bans players from using the hip-drop tackle. A violation will result in a 15-yard penalty and could ultimately result in fines for players.

Team owners also approved a new kickoff rule which is designed to increase the number of kickoff returns per game. Kickers will kick off from their own 35-yard line. The 10 other players from the kicking team will line up on the opposing team’s 40-yard line.

Owners also approved a modification to the league’s challenge system proposed by the Detroit Lions. Owners approved granting a team a third challenge if the team is successful in either of its first two challenges.
