The Indiana Fever are coming off an impressive 2024 season, spearheaded by Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark. However, despite their strong campaign, they fell short of their ultimate goal, losing in the first round of the postseason.
Now, with the 2025 season set to begin in May and new head coach Stephanie White taking the reins, the team is focused on making the next step forward.
Before the season starts, however, free agency is on the horizon. Starting on Jan. 21, teams can begin negotiating with free agents, although no deals can be signed until Feb. 1, and the Indiana Fever are expected to lose a key veteran player to free agency
Former 2019 WNBA All-Star and 10-year veteran Erica Wheeler posted some cryptic messages on Monday, hinting that she will not be returning to the Fever. Wheeler also revealed that she has a list of teams she plans to explore in free agency.
“I’m letting ya’ll know now! Ima drop some hints but ima be real petty about it! It’a all fun and games tho! Don’t curse me out.” Wheeler posted. “My agent sent me a list for free agency. Tuhhhhh.”
While Wheeler wasn’t a major source of production down the stretch of the season for Indiana—especially after Lexie Hull emerged onto the scene—she remained a crucial leader, particularly for a team that is one of the youngest in the WNBA.

On Sept. 16, following a Fever game, Clark spoke highly of Wheeler’s role in her development and the team’s growth, highlighting just how vital her presence has been. This makes the news of Wheeler’s potential departure a little more gut-wrenching.
