If there were a college for students of Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Snoop Dogg, they would undoubtedly be its most successful alumni. Dr. Dre played a pivotal role in launching Eminem into the spotlight with the rapper’s debut album, “The Slim Shady LP,” and he also produced a significant number of songs on Snoop’s debut solo album, “Doggystyle.” These two rappers, along with Dr. Dre, collaborated on “2001,” Dre’s album released in 1999. However, despite being teammates in Dr. Dre’s elite team, Eminem and Snoop Dogg weren’t exactly the best of friends. It wasn’t until Dr. Dre had a near-death experience that these two rappers managed to squash their beef.
To understand what led to the tension between these two hip-hop legends, we have to go back to the beginning. Eminem’s “The Marshall Mathers LP” in 2000 is often considered one of the greatest rap albums of all time. While it boasted incredible solo tracks, its collaborations elevated it to masterpiece status. One such collaboration was “B**ch Please II,” featuring Dr. Dre, Xzibit, Nate Dogg, and Snoop Dogg. However, despite the success of this track, fans were left wanting more collaboration between Eminem and Snoop.
Both rappers were part of the Up in Smoke Tour, further fueling fans’ hopes for a new collaboration. However, after the tour, Eminem and Snoop seemed to drift apart creatively. Eminem continued to collaborate with Dre, Xzibit, and Nate Dogg, leaving fans puzzled as to why a collaboration with Snoop never materialized.
Years later, Daz Dillinger, a former record producer at Death Row Records, hinted at the reason behind the rift. According to Daz, Snoop had also requested a feature from Eminem, feeling entitled to it because of their previous collaboration. When Eminem declined, Snoop felt slighted, leading to tension between the two.
However, despite this speculation, neither Snoop nor Eminem confirmed these claims. In fact, in 2009, when Eminem made a comeback with “Relapse” and “Recovery,” Snoop praised the rapper. The period of no collaboration coincided with Eminem’s battle with addiction, which he admitted affected his relationships with other rappers.
The feud took a public turn in July 2020 when Snoop questioned Eminem’s place among the top 10 rappers. Eminem responded with a diss track, “Zeus,” mentioning Snoop by name. This reignited the beef, with Snoop initially responding on Instagram before previewing a diss track aimed at Eminem.
However, everything changed when Dr. Dre suffered a cerebral aneurysm in January 2021. This life-threatening experience led Eminem and Snoop to reconsider their feud. They had a conversation, realizing that their beef was pointless. Snoop apologized for his remarks, acknowledging that they were out of line.
Since then, Eminem and Snoop have been seen together on several occasions, sparking rumors of a potential collaboration. While a collaborative album may be wishful thinking, fans remain hopeful for new music from these two hip-hop legends. Ultimately, their reconciliation serves as a reminder of the importance of mutual respect and understanding in the hip-hop community.
