ESPN anchor Elle Duncan questioned fellow journalist Christine Brennan over her constant attention to Caitlin Clark, particularly following Brennan’s controversial question to DiJonai Carrington regarding whether she intentionally poked Clark’s injury during Game 1 of the Indiana Fever versus Connecticut Sun playoff series.

On her October 3 show, Duncan hosted Holly Rowe, who talked about the lack of attention on Clark’s experience with social media threats. Duncan touched on that topic and twisted it a little bit, implying that Christine Brennan has a bias toward Clark, saying that she’s constantly speaking about Clark and trying to ‘corner’ her opponents.

“Every time she goes to a press conference, every question is about Caitlin Clark and they’re typically in a let me corner you type of way,” Duncan said. “Now, I’m not the one personally to judge whether she should have her credential taken because I’m not the one that’s the target of death threats based on some of the stories that she pumps out or the discourse that she continues to convey.

Moreover, she talked about how some reporters have been more focused on Caitlin, calling them ‘psychofans’ and ‘weird.’

“It’s shocking to me to watch some of these journalists who used to say all of the things that you said, that used to have some of those journalistic practices that have just turned into Caitlin psychofans and it’s a little weird to me,” she added.

Even after her season came to an end, Clark remains a recurrent topic around the WNBA world.

Shannon Sharpe claps back at Caitlin Clark’s critics saying she’s diminished the impact of WNBA legends
Elle Duncan said that a group of fans of Clark are ‘weaponizing’ the impact that the players who came before her made on the league. In contrast, Shannon Sharpe said that Clark being great doesn’t take anything away from the old generation.

“Caitlin Clark is box office,” Sharpe said. “Instead of giving her credit, y’all tried to make it ‘oh y’all poo-pooin the old guard, y’all never talked about the old guard like this.’ Nah! I ain’t gonna let it slide, Caitlin Clark, unanimous Rookie of the Year but what’s even more impressive, she’s first-team WNBA.” [9:50 mark]

The 2024 WNBA season was remarkable for Clark, but some things must change regarding so-called fans if the WNBA wants to experience more growth.
