Justin Bieber was just one of the surprises Coachella 2024 had in store for fans this weekend.
On Sunday, April 14, the “Never Say Never” artist, 30, made an unexpected appearance during Tems’ set at the California music festival alongside Wizkid.
While Tems was in the midst of performing the first verse of “Essence,” she grinned as Wizkid appeared onstage, per fan-recorded footage of the set. As the duo alternated verses, Bieber shocked the audience by emerging from the side of the stage and serenading the “Higher” musician, 28. At the end of her set, Tems shared her gratitude for having her special guests and told the crowd, “This is crazy.”
The Grammy-nominated singer had been teasing the excitement of her set ahead of time with a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) in the hours leading up to her performance.
“Coachella! I’m too exciteddd I have a surprise tonight 👀,” she wrote on the platform.
“Essence” was originally released in 2020 by Wizkid featuring Tems. The following year, a remix of the track was released featuring Bieber. It became the first Nigerian song to chart the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200.
Tems’ Coachella set featured nine songs, including a new one called “Love Me JeJe.”
Other tracks featured were “Avoid Things,” “Replay,” “Crazy Tings,” “Higher” and “Damages.” She ended the concert with “Me & U” and “Free Mind.”
Bieber has remained largely under the radar since June 2022, when he announced his diagnosis of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which resulted in one half of his face experiencing paralysis. However, he appeared to be in good health on Sunday as he took the stage at Coachella.
At the time, the “Favorite Girl” performer said his condition was “pretty serious.”
“I wish this wasn’t the case, but obviously, my body is telling me I got to slow down, and I hope you guys understand, and I’ll be using this time to rest and relax and get back to 100 percent so that I can do what I was born to do,” shared Bieber.
He also added that he was taking time to work on his health and was working on “facial exercises to get my face back to normal.”
“It will go back to normal. It’s just time,” Bieber said. “We don’t know how long it will be, but it will be OK.”
