Kanye West is facing legal challenges after failing to attend a recent court hearing related to his ongoing lawsuit with his former business partner, Gap. Court documents from the Los Angeles Superior Court reveal that West and his company, Yeezy, did not appear for a scheduled hearing on September 12, nor did they inform the court about new legal representation after his previous lawyers withdrew from the case.
The judge granted Gap’s request for a representative from Yeezy to be present for a deposition, and West himself will soon be required to sit for his own deposition in the case.
This legal dispute stems from a lawsuit filed by Art City Center in 2022, which accused Gap of making unapproved modifications to a building leased in downtown Los Angeles. The building was intended for use as part of the partnership between West’s Yeezy brand and Gap, which had launched in 2020.
However, the partnership between West and Gap dissolved two years later, with West accusing the retail giant of not adhering to their agreement.
Art City Center’s lawsuit is seeking over $800,000 in damages from Gap, while Gap has countersued West and Yeezy for $2 million, claiming that the modifications were made by West’s team without Gap’s knowledge or approval.
“By making and not repairing or restoring the foregoing alterations of the premises that [West] made without Gap’s participation or approval, [West] breached the strategic agreement and directly and proximately caused Gap to incur expenses to repair and restore the premises.” the suit against West claims.
