Gareth Southgate selected a 33-man provisional squad ahead of this summer’s tournament – and seven of those are set to be cut when the final squad is released.

After much speculation surrounding the upcoming announcement, it emerged on Wednesday night that Spurs midfielder James Maddison would not be picked to represent the Three Lions this summer.

The 27-year-old, who made 28 appearances in the Premier League last season under Ange Postecoglou, featured in the 3-0 friendly win against Bosnia.

But the midfielder will not travel with the final group to Germany.

Maddison was included in the 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar but failed to make a single appearance throughout the tournament.

Now, it has emerged that Curtis Jones will be among the players to miss out.

Jones, who made 36 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool last season, has already been informed that he won’t be part of Gareth Southgate’s plans this summer.

Liverpool teammate Jarell Quansah is also ‘expected’ to miss out, according to the Daily Mail.

Trent Alexander-Arnold featuring in a midfield role for his country could be the reason behind Jones’ omission.

Southgate admitted he was impressed by what he saw from the 25-year-old, who has established himself as one of the best full-backs in world football at Liverpool.

Speaking after the Bosnia game, he said: “We were very pleased. It is a role he is discovering and he is hungry to learn and has been since I talked to him about playing it a year or so ago, and equally what we saw in the last half an hour is also an important option for us as well.”

Southgate added: “We are going to have different challenges in this tournament, and we are going to have to have different ways of solving problems that teams pose us.”
