“Shaq can’t go bar for bar with me”: LSU star Flau’jae Johnson throws a playful jibe at Shaquille O’Neal
LSU star Flau’jae Johnson throws a playful jibe at Shaquille O’Neal
Flau’jae Johnson is a fierce guard by day and an introspective rapper by night. The LSU star has released 17 songs on Spotify and is preparing to release her first album on June 21. It’s rumored to include a Lil Wayne collaboration.
Flau’jae Johnson, on a promo run, joined Ebro, Laura Stylez and Rosenberg of the Ebro In The Morning Show on Hot 97 radio. She was asked about the best rapping basketball player. After giving it a thought, Johnson said:
“I don’t know because none of them can’t go bar for bar with me. So I’m not sure I know. I know Master P played in the NBA (the development league)”
After the host pointed out Shaquille O’Neal, the rapper said:
“Shaq had a platinum record right? He had a song with Biggie, but Shaq can’t go bar for bar with me. Like realistic questions, but that he was the most dominant in the game. You see what I’m saying, like he was the most dominant he’s probably the most dominant player ever to play the game but musically he’s not standing next to (me).”
Flau’jae Johnson also added that J Cole was her favorite rapper but as he’s not a basketball player, she could not include him.
Flau’jae Johnson reveals why she chose LSU over other programs
Flau’jae Johnson grew up surrounded by music, as her father was rapper Camoflauge. Her first performance as a rapper was on a Lifetime reality series called The Rap Game when she was 13.
Later, Johnson auditioned for America’s Got Talent with her original song, Guns Down, at 14. She participated until the quarterfinals. Throughout high school, Johnson balanced school, music and basketball.
However, things changed when she was looking to transition to college basketball.
“When I was getting recruited, a lot of teams kept asking me, ‘Which one do you wanna do?’ And I’d be like, ‘I wanna do both,’” she said via Yahoo Sports. “And they wouldn’t understand me so I was like, I’ll just do music (and quit basketball).
“I was already making money, already buzzing. But then I found a place (LSU) that really understood my vision and just allowed me to be myself while playing the sport I love.”
During the 2024 March Madness run, Flau’jae Johnson released AMF with NLE Choppa and even promoted the song during a post-game presser.
While she prepares for her new album, Johnson is also practicing for the upcoming season, where she will lead the LSU Tigers without Angel Reese by her side.
