Man Utd 'have €60m bid rejected' for one of Europe's most sought after prospects

Manchester United are looking to bolster their midfield options this summer.

Manchester United have had a €60 million bid rejected for one of Europe’s most highly-rated midfielders, according to reports – and details of the offer make for interesting reading.

The Reds are likely to make some big-money signings this summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team at INEOS attempt to improve matters on the pitch following a disappointing campaign.

United will reportedly prioritise signing a centre-back after Raphael Varane’s departure. Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite continues to be linked with a potential £40 million move.

And as well as defensive options, United are also said to be tracking in-form Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, who has a release clause believed to be in the region of £60 million.

So what about midfield recruits? Casemiro looks to be on his way out as a number of Saudi Pro League clubs swirl, including Al Nassr, who see him as a priority target to strengthen their squad.

United, meanwhile, have sent scouts to watch Benfica midfielder Joao Neves on numerous occasions last season.

In fact, a report from Portuguese outlet Record suggests United have made an opening offer of €60 million [£51m] for the talented Portugal international, although the bid was immediately turned down by Benfica director Rui Costa.

However, further details surrounding United’s interest suggest a deal could be on the horizon.

The publication say Costa would not consider negotiations ‘for a sum below €100 million [£85m]’ – a number that is €20 million lower than Neves’ release clause at the Estadio da Luz.

And the report adds that United are ‘further along’ with their attempts to sign the 19-year-old midfielder amid interest from a host of top European clubs, including Manchester City and PSG.

“By rejecting the €60m offer, Rui Costa’s message to the market is clear,” Record add. “He will only give up Joao Neves’ talent in exchange for a 3-digit check worth millions.”

It was reported in March that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to approve a record-breaking offer of more than £100 million to sign Neves this summer.

United midfielder Bruno Fernandes says his fellow countryman is “ready” to make that jump and play for a top club.

Speaking to Portuguese broadcaster Sport TV, Fernandes was asked about Neves being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

“I don’t know if United rumours are true, but I know he is ready for that big jump,” he replied.

“He is an excellent player, he’s with the national team… that’s also why the big clubs are after him.”

Fernandes was full of praise for Neves back in November. “It has to be the Man United coach who says whether he has a place or not,” he said.

“He’s a great player, I don’t know if he would have a place or not. It depends on the coach and his ideas.

“But he’s an excellent player and an excellent kid, very professional, he will have a bright future wherever he goes. I would love to have him by my side. Because he has quality and will have a bright future.”
