United were in talks to sign another highly-rated goalkeeper before signing Andre Onana.

Manchester United failed to sign a goalkeeper now described as ‘one of the most exciting prospects on the planet’ prior to agreeing a deal for Andre Onana.

Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Onana, 28, is facing more scrutiny following his underwhelming performance in United’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

His positioning for Mohamed Salah’s third goal was questioned after the match, while his distribution was also below par at times during the game.

Before the start of the season, Onana warned fans that he could “take risks” in the campaign – particularly when using his feet.

“That’s me. And I think it’s what you’re gonna see this season because I will take a lot of risks,” he said.

“I can tell you in advance already! Be prepared because it’s gonna be this season, trust me! I will enjoy it even more when this season starts.”

Onana has struggled for consistency since joining United in a £47.2m move from Inter in 2023. At times he has shown his world-class ability, but has also been guilty of major errors in crucial moments.

Prior to signing the Cameroon international, United were in talks to bring little-known Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to Old Trafford.

The Japan international, 22, was identified by manager Erik ten Hag as a potential replacement for Dean Henderson as the club’s No 2, with United also in talks to sign Onana at the time.

Suzuki, however, was unwilling to become a back-up goalkeeper and opted instead to remain with Japanese club Urawa Red Diamonds, later joining Belgian club Sint-Truiden on loan.

He joined Italian side Parma on a five-year deal last month and has made three appearances so far for the Serie A club.

After impressing in his first two games, Suzuki was sent off against Napoli on Saturday – a red card which allowed the hosts to come from behind to beat Parma 2-1 thanks to two stoppage-time goals.

Despite that early setback to his career in Italy, Suzuki has already produced some impressive stats.

Respected football analyst Statman Dave has reported that Suzuki has ‘saved 15 of the 17 shots he has faced in Serie A this season, conceding 2.0 fewer goals than xG would suggest he should’ – describing him as ‘one of the most exciting goalkeeping prospects on the planet’.

Some United fans on social media have questioned why the club did not push harder to sign Suzuki, given his relatively cheap transfer fee – with the goalkeeper costing Parma just €10m (£8.4m).

“Scouts have never been the issue,” posted one fan on X.

Another added: “Ten Hag wanted this guy ffs.”

While a third wrote: “I’m hoping he will be a United player in the future.”
