ESPN Milwaukee radio hosts are under fire for some classless and disgusting comments they made about Brock Purdy ahead of the Green Bay Packers-San Francisco 49ers Divisional Round tilt on Saturday.

Appearing on ESPN Milwaukee’s “Jen, Gabe & Chewy” program, former Packers star tight end Mark Chmura brought up the team’s giant upset over Steve Young’s 49ers in the 1995 NFC Divisional Round.

Chmura explained that the Packers used their physicality and toughness to intimidate the 49ers en route to a 27-17 victory. Chmura then suggested that the Packers “late hit” the 49ers’ star quarterback to send a message:

“A 15-yard penalty, and I don’t condone this, but I kinda do in the playoffs…a 15-yard penalty for a late hit on Brock Purdy is not a bad thing as long as it’s worth it. I’m just saying, this is the mindset you go into when it’s battle.”

Not only would such a strategy on the Packers’ end be completely out of line (Bountygate, anyone?), dirty and gross, but it’s not gonna work in today’s NFL, either.

The league has gone great lengths to protect quarterbacks by strictly enforcing “roughing the passer” penalties, so any “late hit” on Purdy is going to draw 15-yard penalties and potentially lead to ejections.

The top-seeded 49ers (13-4) are the overwhelming favorites to defeat Jordan Love and the seventh-seeded Packers, who are coming off a stunning upset win over the Dallas Cowboys on Super Wild Card Weekend.
