'My mom would drive me past her old house': Taylor Swift opens up on her mother Andrea's Singapore roots

SINGAPORE CITY, SINGAPORE: Taylor Swift has a special connection to Singapore where her mother Andrea Swift spent part of her childhood.

The pop star opened up about her family history during her first of six shows at the National Stadium in Singapore on Saturday, March 2.

Taylor Swift’s mother spent a lot of time in Singapore

In a fan-shot video posted on X, Taylor revealed that her mother lived in Singapore with her parents and sister when she was young.

“My mom actually spent a lot of her childhood with her mom and dad and sister growing up in Singapore,” Taylor said.

 

She added that her mother often showed her around the city where she used to go to school and live.

“So a lot of the time when we’d come here on tour, my mom would take me and drive me past her old house,” Taylor said, adding “So I’ve been hearing about Singapore my whole life.”

Taylor Swift feels honored by Singapore fans

Taylor expressed her gratitude and love for her Singapore fans, who sang along to her songs and cheered for her. She said that performing for them was a way of honoring her family and their roots.

“To get to come here and play a show this big with so many beautiful, generous people who are essentially honoring my family with what you just did with that song, it means the world,” Taylor said.

She also promised to have a blast with them for the rest of the night. “I already love you,” the ‘Blank Space’ singer said, adding “We’re going to have a blast tonight.”

Taylor Swift’s song for her mother

Taylor has always been close to her mother who has been her biggest supporter and friend.

In 2023, during a Mother’s Day show in Philadelphia, Taylor performed her 2008 fan-favorite ‘The Best Day’, in which she wrote about her mother and their memories together.

“I wrote this song just compiling these sort of core childhood memories I had of not just her as a mother, but her as a friend,” Swift said, as per a fan-shot video at the time.

She recalled how her mother reacted when she first heard the song. “It’s such a beautiful song. Where did you find it? It sounds exactly like the things we went through,” Andrea said.

Taylor then told her, “I was like, ‘Mom, I wrote it and recorded it secretly, it is our memories. It was the sweetest thing ever because I just think she couldn’t have comprehended that I would write a song about the two of us,” People reported.
