Corey Perry’s Bonus-Filled Season with the Oilers

Corey Perry’s year with the Edmonton Oilers has been full of controversy, not just on the ice but also in his wallet.

After a rough end with the Chicago Blackhawks, Perry signed a deal with the Oilers that paid him the minimum salary but included chances to earn extra money through bonuses.

He got a $225,000 bonus just for playing in 10 games this season, which he did easily by playing 38 games. This move was clever because it helped the Oilers spread out costs for the next season under the league’s salary rules.

The playoffs have been even more rewarding for Perry, despite him being healthy scratched for multiple games straight, marking what’s likely to be the end of his long NHL career.

After the Oilers won a crucial game that got them into the semifinals, Perry earned another $50,000.

This bonus was based on him playing in at least half of the Oilers’ playoff games up to that point. Even more interesting, Perry didn’t play in that particular game but had played enough earlier games to earn the bonus.

Now, as the Oilers aim for the Stanley Cup Finals, Perry could get another $50,000. He’s already played in 10 out of 12 playoff games, which means he’s set to get this bonus no matter what happens next.

While this likely marks the end of Perry’s career, he’s clearly laughing all the way to the bank while sitting in the press box watching his team succeed.
