Seven NFL teams were or are looking for a new head coach, yet only one has talked to a six-time Super Bowl winner in Bill Belichick. That is quite shocking.
The legendary coach’s candidacy for Atlanta’s gig has “lost momentum in the past week,” The Athletic reported Tuesday.
If something changes and Belichick becomes the head coach, his first order of business is to fix the terrible quarterback position and that may lead to him looking elsewhere since Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke are clearly not the options.
The Falcons could greatly improve the position by going after veteran Kirk Cousins.
Cousins previously said he wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to play for Belichick.
“I’m not going to turn down an opportunity to play with a future Hall of Fame coach, but we’ll have to see where March leads,” Cousins told CBS Sports. “It’s just a lot of unknowns right now.”
One NFL executive believes Belichick and Cousins will join forces in Atlanta.
“[Belichick] can help a talented yet underachieving team, and Atlanta is that,” an AFC executive told ESPN. “Cousins would be a great fit there.”
After he and the Patriots parted ways on Jan. 11, Belichick interviewed with the Falcons twice in just over a week. Belichick interviewed with the team on January 15th and again on Jan. 19, reportedly meeting with Falcons CEO Rich McKay and general manager Terry Fotenot in addition to Blank.
The Falcons were quickly viewed as the favorite by both insiders and the betting market to land Belichick.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is perhaps the most intriguing free agent hitting the market this offseason after his stellar 2023 season was cut short due to an Achilles tear.
He may finally find himself off the team this offseason.
