Former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton caused quite the stir with his questionable take on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

During a recent edition of his “4th and 1” podcast, the 2015 league MVP suggested that Purdy simply isn’t a “game changer”. Newton took it a step further by stating that Purdy isn’t even a top-nine player on the 49ers.

“If you really wanna just be honest, if you add in the defensive talent, and you add in offensive talent, Brock Purdy is the 10th-best player on his team,” Newton said.

It was quite the hot take from Newton, considering that Purdy is a finalist for the MVP Award, and that he just led the 49ers to their first Super Bowl appearance in four years.

So as you’d expect, Newton’s comments caused plenty of objections from fans on social media…

Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk can easily be placed above Purdy on the 49ers’ list of “best players.” On defense, you can definitely put Fred Warner and Nick Bosa above Purdy.

But it’s hard to make a case that any other San Francisco player is better or more valuable than Purdy. Not to mention that the 49ers were 5-0 in games started by Purdy last year, but 8-4 with Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance.

Any great quarterback needs a strong supporting cast to win. And Purdy has been miles better than any other quarterback Kyle Shanahan previously worked with in San Francisco.

The bottom line: Purdy can silence all the critics once and for all if he can guide the 49ers past Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58.
