Will Travis Kelce retire? Patrick Mahomes says Chiefs TE will make his own decision about future after Super Bowl loss image

The Chiefs lost to the Eagles in Super Bowl 59. Kansas City was going for a three-peat, but what unfolded was a blowout loss that was only helped by the fact that the Chiefs scored some garbage-time touchdowns to make it look closer than it was.

The game was expected to be big for Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce. He is likely a future Hall of Famer, and another ring would only have strengthened his case.

Cooper DeJean’s top plays 2024 season

Kelce set the record for most receptions in a Super Bowl in a career with 35 in the defeat. While the 35-year-old is under contract for one more year, there was speculation that if the Chiefs won another Super Bowl, he would consider riding off into the sunset.

With Kansas City’s loss, Kelce still must decide whether to hang up his cleats or come back for another year in 2025. Here’s what Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said about Kelce’s choice after the game.

Will Travis Kelce retire?

We don’t know yet. The tight end is under contract for one more season, but he could retire any time.

If he does choose to step away after the Super Bowl loss, Kansas City would retain his rights — meaning Kelce could retire ahead of the 2025 season, but if he ever elected to return, he would still be on the Chiefs.

Kelce wasn’t asked about his plans for next season after the game. But quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked about whether Kelce would come back next season. Mahomes said Kelce would go spend time with family and then make that decision.

Mahomes’ response not being an automatic yes at least shows that there is a chance that Kelce does choose to retire and not return for the Chiefs in 2025.
