The United legend could make a surprise return to the Premier League.

The odds have been slashed on a Manchester United legend returning to the Premier League in a surprise managerial role.

Europe’s top leagues have barely finished, but already the managerial merry-go-round is up and running.

Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Tuchel left Chelsea, Brighton and Bayern Munich by mutual consent respectively, while Jurgen Klopp stepped down as Liverpool boss and Xavi was sacked by Barcelona.

As a result there will be plenty of new faces in dugouts next season, and Man United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy could be among them.

The former Dutch striker scored 150 goals in 219 appearances for United, and also turned out for PSV Eindhoven and Real Madrid.

Van Nistelrooy moved into coaching after hanging up his boots in 2012, enjoying two spells as assistant coach with the Netherlands before becoming manager of PSV in 2022-23.

The 47-year-old has been out of work since leaving PSV after just one season in charge, but now the odds have been slashed on him replacing Vincent Kompany at Burnley.

The former Manchester City captain is set to become the new manager of Bayern Munich, after the Bundesliga giants failed to hire Xabi Alonso or persuade Tuchel to reverse his decision.

Kompany led Burnley to promotion to the Premier League in his first season in charge, but he was unable to steer them clear of relegation this term.

Sky Bet has former Fulham boss Scott Parker at 5/2 favourite to become the next permanent Burnley boss and Frank Lampard at 3/1.

The odds on Van Nistelrooy have been slashed from 16/1 to 10/3, placing him ahead of former Nottingham Forest coach Steve Cooper (8/1) and David Moyes (12/1).
