One Euro 2024 group has already helped make unique piece of history that may never be matched

History has already been made at Euro 2024.

One of the groups at Euro 2024 has already made history with two matches still left to play.

The group stage of Euro 2024 will draw to a close this week, but already the tournament has been one to remember.

After 26 matches there has been just one goalless draw, while there have been plenty of late drama, stunning goals and moments of magic.

Many of the games have been free-flowing and end-to-end, making it hard to predict the outcome of many games.

That has certainly been the case in Group E, contested by Romania, Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine.

Slovakia and Romania won on matchday one with victories against Belgium and Ukraine respectively.

However, on matchday two Belgium beat Romania and Ukraine beat Slovakia to leave all four sides tied on three points heading into the final games.

It is the first time in the history of the European Championship that all four teams in a group are tied on the same number of points after two matches.

Because the way the results have fallen in the group so far, Romania and Slovakia – who meet on Wednesday in Frankfurt – will both qualify fort he last-16 with a draw.

As one social media user pointed out, if they really wanted to the two sides could just pass the ball around in the centre circle for 90 minutes and play out a goalless draw.

That’s because, in the event of a goalless draw, Ukraine would have to beat Belgium by at least two goals in order to qualify.

In that scenario, the Belgium would drop to the bottom of the group on points.

If Belgium beat Ukraine and Slovakia draw with Romania, then Ukraine would be eliminated on points.

If both matches end in draws, then Ukraine will be eliminated on goal difference. Head to-head tie-breakers don’t work in Group E due to conflicting results so far.

If the final matches in Group E end in draws, then one team will finish bottom of the group and be eliminated despite having four points, likely a higher points total than some of the teams that reach the last-16 by being one of the four best third-place finishers.
