Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs plans for new NFL season revealed with ‘revenge tour’ mentality after Super Bowl humiliation (PO)

Mahomes also presents the Chiefs with a big dilemma

PATRICK MAHOMES will embark on a “revenge tour” after missing out on the Super Bowl, says Chiefs’ team-mate Charles Omenihu.

The quarterback suffered defeat in the Super Bowl for the second time in his career as the Philadephia Eagles stormed a 40-22 victory.

Patrick Mahomes #15 of the Kansas City Chiefs after Super Bowl LIX.

Mahomes has led the Kansas City Chiefs to at least the conference championship game in every season since he became starting quarterback in 2018.

He is already a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP, and Omeniju predicts Mahomes will be more than determined than ever to add to those honours.

Omenihu said on the Up & Adams show: “Just extreme focus, taking even more control of the organization.

“We’re gonna get my boy [wide receiver] Rashee [Rice] back, so that’s going to be great. With how [Xavier Worthy] has been playing, and hopefully be able to figure out the rest of the pieces

“I think it’s going to be big time. He probably felt like he didn’t have his best performance and him being who he is and being the best quarterback in the league, he wants to come back and have one of those big seasons.

“So, I think it’ll be like somebody who’s on a mission for sure.”

The Chiefs will be ready to go again but they first need to lose $1million from their salary expenditure.

Kansas City will have 20 unrestricted free agents to decide on whether to pay or not, and they’ll also have to wait and see if Travis Kelce will retire, or stay in the league.

Nonetheless, the Chiefs can find a way to create cap space by modifying the $66.2 million cap hit Mahomes.

The team could convert $47.7 million of Mahomes’ money into a restructuring bonus.

That payment can be spread out over the next five seasons.

So his 2025 salary will go down to just $11.8 million and, after bonuses, his cap hit will only be $28 million.

As a result, the Chiefs will receive close to $39 million in cap space.

Kelce will be a massive name that could be affected by the potential Mahomes’ restructuring move.

If the 10-time Pro Bowl tight end Kelce calls it quits or if the Chiefs trade or cut him, the team will save $17.25 million.

On March 14, Kelce is due an $11.5 million roster bonus.

That’s the same day in which the Chiefs have reportedly set a deadline for Kelce to decide whether he will return or leave the sport.

Kansas City, who failed to achieve the three-peat, can look to continue their Super Bowl window and create more cap flexibility for the next campaign in other ways.

The franchise can save $20.6 million by restructuring star defensive tackle Chris Jones’ contract.

They can also create $22.07 million in cap space by extending the six-time Pro Bowler.
