Patrick Mahomes entered nearly uncharted territory in Sunday’s 40-22 Super Bowl 59 loss to the Eagles.

The Chiefs star entered the night with just three playoff losses on his record, two of which came in overtime. The only exception was a 22-point loss to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55.

Sunday’s blowout defeat resembled much more of the Super Bowl 55 loss than any of the others. The Chiefs were bludgeoned throughout the first three quarters, and no amount of offensive momentum Mahomes built in the fourth quarter could make up the deficit.

Cameras captured a visibly emotional Mahomes taking it all in and consoling teammates on the sideline at the end of Sunday night’s loss.

It was clear how much the loss meant to Mahomes, who hadn’t lost in the playoffs in more than three years. At the end of the day, though, he had plenty of time to let it all sink in. The Chiefs trailed by a handful of touchdowns throughout the second half, falling behind by as much as 34.

While a late flurry of action put 22 points on the board for Kansas City, it was after Xavier Worthy’s second and final touchdown of the night that Mahomes seemed to realize the game was now totally out of his control.

Mahomes admitted after the loss Sunday that the Chiefs faced nearly impossible odds of recovering after his two first-half interceptions.

“That’s 14 points that I already game them,” Mahomes said, explaining that the Eagles were too good of a team to let them come back once the tide shifted so much.

A pick-six of Mahomes by rookie Cooper DeJean extended the Eagles’ lead to 17-0 in the second quarter, and an interception by Zack Baun set up an A.J. Brown touchdown to stretch Philadelphia’s lead to 24.

“Just didn’t play to my standard,” Mahomes said.

Asked how the loss compared to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl 55 loss to the Buccaneers, Mahomes said the feeling when the game went final was the same.

“Any time you lose a Super Bowl, it’s the worst feeling in the world that will stick with you for the rest of your career,” he explained.

Mahomes said the two Super Bowl losses will motivate him to be even better going forward, as he enters a new phase of his career in his 30s. At the same, he praised Jalen Hurts for getting back to the big stage after a painful loss two years ago.

“That’s stuff that not everybody has,” Mahomes said of Hurts’ ability to make decisions on the fly as both a passer and runner. Hurts rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ win.

For the first time since 2022, Mahomes will not open the regular season on a Thursday night. After the Eagles raise their banner in the NFL’s kickoff game, Mahomes and the Chiefs will launch what they hope is a revenge tour.
