Princess Kate's awkward moment

Princess Kate is famous for being a master at navigating every situation with confidence. However, the mother of three had to experience a rare dilemma when hosting a Muslim community leader.

On March 9, Prince William and Princess Kate visited the Hayes Islamic Center in London (UK) to meet philanthropists who have raised funds to support countries heavily affected by the earthquake.

At the event, the Princess of Wales once again impressed with her elegant, sophisticated style and clear message.

The mother-of-three wore a white headscarf with black embroidery by Pakistani brand Élan, teamed with a vintage coat by Catherine Walker and a ruffled skirt by Alexander McQueen. The discreet appearance shows Princess Kate’s observance when appearing in a Muslim space and surrounded by Muslims.

However, a person as famous for her skill in diplomacy as Princess Kate encountered an awkward situation because she forgot to learn about Muslim rituals.

Upon arrival at the Hayes Islamic Center, the Welsh couple was welcomed by several Muslim community leaders. Prince William shook hands with each person in turn. Kate also shook hands with one of them. However, when she extended her hand to Mr. Iman Sufyan Iqbal, the leader did not receive it, instead placing his hand on his heart and bowing his head.

Princess Kate quickly withdrew her hand and imitated Iman Sufyan’s gesture with a friendly smile. Although the situation happened quickly, the beauty born in 1982 seemed to pause for a moment because of confusion.

According to Daily Mail, placing a hand over the heart with a slight nod or bow is considered a polite way for men to greet women in the Muslim tradition.

Meanwhile, according to Western codes of conduct, men and women do not shake hands unless the woman extends her hand first and the man is ready to reciprocate the gesture.

However, Muslims believe that a man having physical contact with a woman who is not his wife or relative is considered “haram”, which in Arabic means sin.

A similar situation happened to Queen Letizia of Spain when welcoming the Iranian ambassador at the Royal Palace in Madrid. The Ambassador shook hands with King Felipe, but bowed to the Queen and placed his hands over his heart.

In addition to center representatives, the Welsh couple also met with relief workers who had just returned from areas damaged by the earthquake. Not only did they provide human support, but they also raised more than 25,000 pounds (nearly 30,000 USD) to help victims in Syria and Türkiye.

The couple also participated in an origami event with the Turkish Women’s Association, creating paper cranes – symbols of healing and hope.
