Gareth Southgate’s future as England boss will reportedly be decided after Euro 2024.

A new name has emerged as a potential leading candidate to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager.

Back in 2016, Southgate was appointed England boss on a permanent basis after taking charge of four matches as interim manager.

The former England international replaced Sam Allardyce, whose tenure ended after just 67 days.

Since then, Southgate has led the Three Lions to the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020.

Ahead of this summer’s Euro 2024 in Germany, Southgate’s future has been plunged into darkness.

As reported by The Telegraph, Southgate is expected to leave his role as England manager if his men fail to win the tournament.

The likes of Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Lee Carsley have all been linked with the England job but there is now a new name.

Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, who left Chelsea earlier in the week, has been sounded out as a potential replacement.

The report stated: “Mauricio Pochettino will be a leading candidate for the England job if he remains out of work and the post becomes available after Euro 2024.

“The England job is one that has been attractive to Pochettino for some time and he announced his interest in succeeding Southgate during the World Cup in Qatar two years ago.”

However, Manchester United could hamper England’s pursuit of Pochettino.

The Argentine is one of the leading candidates to replace Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman set to be sacked by the Old Trafford club after this weekend’s FA Cup final.

Back in 2022, Pochettino was asked about the possibility of managing England. He replied: “Of course, my relationship with England has always been very good. We have a very good relationship with the academies, trying to develop young players for the national team.

“I feel so comfortable here. You never know what happens. I am open to everything.”

Pochettino added: “Always, when I arrived at Southampton we were really proud to provide players to the national team because we are so grateful to English football because of the way you have received us, the welcome.

“We love the English culture and in every single club, like in Southampton, then Tottenham. We are grateful through giving the possibility for the England team to have players that get the possibility to play.”
