According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Belichick has said that he is looking to coach an underachieving team boasting talent. Fowler also noted that the Falcons fit the bill and that there is mutual interest between the two parties.
“We were hearing for a while that the Falcons were interested and so now I’m hearing that there is mutual interest between the Falcons and Belichick,” he said during SportsCenter on Tuesday. “To what extent? Still unclear.
“But enough for them to meet in person with owner Arthur Blank talking to Belichick, hashing out what their vision might be for that program for a team that’s really a quarterback away. I was told from the beginning that Belichick would likely target talented, yet underachieving teams. Atlanta probably falls in that category.”
Belichick won six Super Bowls during his time with the Pats, also snagging 17 AFC East titles and nine ACF championships. However, he’s struggled in the years without Tom Brady, missing out on the playoffs three out of four seasons since the quarterback left.
The Falcons would present a favorable environment given that their roster is loaded with talent and they have been hovering around the playoffs for the last few seasons. They have the look of a team missing just a few more pieces to make it to the postseason and possibly go on a run.
Belichick may well be the difference.
