The Indianapolis Star suspended columnist Gregg Doyel for two weeks following his exchange with Caitlin Clark during the Indiana Fever’s media day, according to veteran sportswriter Bob Kravitz.
Doyel won’t be attending Fever games this season, either.
He received swift criticism for what were deemed to be inappropriate remarks when referencing Clark’s “heart hands” gesture she makes to her family at games:
Doyel apologized hours later, writing he welcomed Clark to Indianapolis “in my uniquely oafish way.” He also penned a column in which he wrote, “I need to be more aware about how I talk to people – not just athletes.”
Doyel said he’s “sort of known locally, sigh, for having awkward conversations with people before asking brashly conversational questions,” explaining he hadn’t understood the underlying dynamics separating men’s and women’s athletes.
According to Kravitz, Doyel’s suspension is scheduled to end May 13, which is one day before the Fever’s season opener against the Connecticut Sun. Whatever writing he does about Clark’s rookie campaign will be done from afar, though.
