One of the greatest and most accomplished head coaches in NFL history may reportedly call it quits after the season.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, it’s possible that Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid will walk away after the 2023 season.:

 

“He hasn’t said anything publicly about it, yet. It would be foolish for the team and members of the current coaching staff and potential external candidates to replace Reid to not be considering the possibility — unless and until there’s definitive word from Reid that he’s returning for 2024.

It’s possible he’s already made a decision. It’s possible the decision will hinge on whether the Chiefs make another run deep into the postseason, perhaps back to the Super Bowl. It’s possible that the players needs to realize this might be it for Reid, in order to access the motivation to have things finally fall together in a way that, to date, they haven’t — especially offensively.”
Of course, Reid hasn’t outright hinted at wanting to retire. Speculation about him walking away began after the Chiefs won Super Bowl 54 (Reid’s first as an NFL head coach) over the San Francisco 49ers.

Reid won a second Super Bowl ring last year, all but cementing his legacy as one of the true all-time greats. With nothing more to accomplish, he could decide to walk away and spend the golden years with his family.

 

But for coaches like Reid, Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll, there’s always that fire and passion that never fully goes away. Even if Reid were to “retire” after this season, there’s always the possibility that he’ll miss the game too much and come back to coach another team (see Bruce Arians).
