The reigning NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers are reportedly interested in adding a former All-Pro linebacker to their defense.

According to a report from Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area & California, San Francisco is “showing strong interest in” veteran linebacker De’Vondre Campbell. The 30-year-old was released by the Green Bay Packers in a cap-saving move on Wednesday.

Campbell emerged as a superstar for the Packers in the 2021 season following a one-year stop with the Arizona Cardinals. That year, he had two interceptions, five pass defenses, two forced fumbles, a pair of sacks and 146 combined tackles en route to First-team All-Pro honors.

But the Packers have made several tough decisions in order to clear cap space. Aside from Campbell, Pro Bowl offensive tackle David Bakhtiari and star running back Aaron Jones were also released in cap-saving moves.

The 49ers have shaken up their defense, letting go of Arik Armstead in another cap-saving move while also signing ex-Buffalo Bills star pass-rusher Leonard Floyd and former Carolina Panthers defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos to multi-year deals.

San Francisco definitely makes sense as a landing spot for the 49ers, who could use another do-it-all linebacker like Campbell to work alongside fellow All-Pro Fred Warner. As great as Warner and edge rusher Nick Bosa are, the Super Bowl 58 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs proved that the 49ers could use some extra help in the front seven.
