Caitlin Clark is leading the WNBA in assists by a large margin with just four games left in the regular season. Her dominance as a rookie makes Alyssa Thomas and Sheryl Swoopes look very silly.
They would’ve been better off keeping their opinions to themselves because their commentary did not age well.
Dijonai Carrington posted about Clark on X during Iowa’s national championship loss to South Carolina on April 7. The Connecticut Sun shooting guard made a prediction about the No. 1 overall pick.
Caitlin might lead the league in assists this year.— @DijonaiVictoria at 3:31pm ET on April 7
Thomas, a teammate of Carrington’s, was drafted No. 4 overall in 2014. She is a five-time WNBA All-Star and set the league record for most assists in a single season last year with 316.
In response to Carrington, Thomas put Clark on notice.
Don’t play with me Nai 😂— @athomas_25 on April 7
Swoopes has a major problem with Clark’s fans. The legendary three-time MVP claims that her beef is not with Clark herself but history would prove otherwise.
Nevertheless, she also laughed at Carrington for neglecting Thomas when it comes to assists.
They look very salty now five months later!
Clark recorded 306 assists through Week 11 of her first season in the WNBA. Thomas is 36 assists behind. Mathematically speaking, barring statistical anomaly, it is currently impossible for the latter to catch the former. Her preseason rebuttal to Carrington was not particularly close to coming true.
If the rookie can get 11 more assists in four games, she will break the single season assist record. It will happen on Friday against the Aces if her average of 8.5 assists per game holds up. It will happen on Wednesday, also against Las Vegas, if she can replicate her 12 assist performance in three of her last five games.
Assuming Caitlin Clark will break the record as expected, Sheryl Swoopes and Alyssa Thomas will be forced to eat their words. Especially Swoopes. Although Thomas was a hater, she was essentially betting on herself. Swoopes was just being a hater.
