We now know both the unofficial and official nickname for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team for the 2024 Paris Olympics — and both are quite the statement-makers.
After taking home the gold medal in the team final on July 30, Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera were asked the one question that many had on their minds: What is their team name?
In past Olympics, the women’s gymnastics team has been known for its group moniker, like the “Fighting Four” during the pandemic-delayed 2020 Tokyo Games and the “Final Five” in 2016’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
“What is your team name?” Aly Raisman, two-time Olympic gymnast and captain of 2012’s “Fierce Five” and 2016’s “Final Five,” asked during a press conference on July 30, in a video shared by Kendall Baker of Yahoo Sports.
“Don’t say it, don’t say it” could be heard coming from the gymnasts, before Biles said, “I’m not going to say it.”
They decided to share the abbreviation of it, which was “F.A.A.F.O.” meaning “f— around and find out.”
However, hours later, Biles shared an update on X, sharing the “official team name.”
“okay on the real though, the official team name is golden girls (because oldest olympic team),” she wrote, adding, “s/o to cecile.”
The “cecile” that Biles mentioned likely refers to her coach at the World Champions Centre in Spring, Texas, Cécile Canqueteau-Landi.
As Biles said in her tweet, the “Golden Girls” team is one of the oldest the U.S. has sent to to the Olympics. At 27, Biles is the oldest U.S. Olympic gymnast in 72 years, NBC News reports.
The team name reveal comes almost a month after the team asked TODAY’s Hoda Kotb and fans for help choosing a nickname.
Hoda tossed out names like “Fantastic Five,” “Phenomenal Five” and “Fearless Five,” which the athletes shot down.
“I feel like it has to be a little bit more younger, hip,” Biles said at the time. “Ask the TikTokers. They’ll think of something.”
TikTok delivered, suggesting “Fifth Harmony,” “Five Stars,” “Flawless Five” and even “Flying Five,” among many others.
Apparently none hit the spot quite like “F.A.A.F.O.” or “Golden Girls.”
Team USA held the lead as it entered the floor exercise, which was the final event. Biles, Lee and Chiles each showed off their powerful moves and impressive routines and Team USA won with a score of 171.296. Italy took the silver medal, while Brazil received the bronze.
This was the U.S. women’s gymnastics team’s first team gold win since 2016’s Rio Games. The emotional win also made Biles, who had performed through a calf injury, the most decorated USA Olympic gymnast with eight medals.
