‘The View’ host suggests Caitlin Clark aided by ‘White privilege,’ not being lesbian

WASHINGTON (TND) — “The View” host Sunny Hostin on Wednesday suggested WNBA star Caitlin Clark’s popularity can be attributed to the fact she is a straight white woman.

In a segment titled “Caitlin Clark Popularity Leads To Questions of Race & Sexuality,” the show’s hosts discussed Clark’s collegiate career, during which she shattered several major records. Host Whoopi Goldberg informed viewers Clark had earned her place in the WNBA unlike some Ivy League students who “only got in because [they’re] Black.”

This girl earned this,” she said. “There are great players but nobody else has done this. I’m not mad they gave her a basketball.”

Hostin acknowledged this, but noted Clark may benefit from other factors outside of her athletic abilities.

I do think there is a thing called pretty privilege,” she said. “There is a thing called White privilege. There is a thing called tall privilege.”

Continuing, Hostin noted Clark stands out among other WNBA players because of her appearance.

“She is more relatable to more people because she’s white, because she’s attractive,” Hostin said. “Unfortunately there still is that stigma against the LGBTQ+ community. 70% of the WNBA is Black and a third of the players are in the LGBTQ+ community. We have to do something about that stigma in this country. I think that people have a problem with basketball-playing women that are lesbians.”

The hosts continued, explaining WNBA players are “sometimes better than the guys.” Goldberg got the last word before the commercial break, adding Clark is a “damn good player whether she’s straight or gay.”
