Not much went right for the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, especially for tight end Travis Kelce.

Amid rumblings that Kelce might retire from football, propose to Taylor Swift, or just yell something loudly into the microphone on the podium in celebration if the Chiefs won, the tight end (and the rest of Kansas City’s offense) turned in a dud.

Kelce finished the night with four catches for 39 yards, but he racked up three of those catches after the Chiefs had fallen behind 34-0. It wasn’t as though Kelce was the problem; he just wasn’t part of the answer.

What’s more, Kelce still managed to make some history in a positive manner on Sunday night–though it’s doubtful he’ll be celebrating it on Bourbon Street after the game.

Kelce’s third catch of the night, recorded on a touchdown drive that would make the score 40-12, was his 34th in his five Super Bowl appearances. That put him one past the legendary Jerry Rice for the all-time Super Bowl catch record.

Kelce accomplished the feat in one more game than Rice had, but it’s still incredible that a tight end could manage to break what most would immediately assume is a wide receiver’s record.

Plus, Kelce already owned the career record for postseason receptions, which he increased to 178 on Saturday,

It’s been a remarkable career for the legendary tight end, who continues to build a resume worthy of being in the greatest of all time conversation. Chiefs fans are certainly hoping that career continues for at least one more year.
