US heptathlon star Chari Hawkins breaks down in tears after shock humiliation in high jump at 2024 Olympics! /hi

Chari Hawkins chances at Olympic gold are likely over after a massive mistake on the second event of the women’s heptathlon.

The Team USA star did not complete her three attempts at the high jump, scoring her zero points in the event. A zero in any of the seven heptathlon events makes the road to win nearly impossible.

Knowing the hole she is in, Hawkins broke down near the barrier to the crowd at the Stade de France in shock that her chances at winning gold were all but done with five events to go.

The 33-year-old Hawkins is competing in her first Olympics, and due to her age, it could easily be her last, making her failure on the high jump all the more devastating.

Hawkins chose her beginning height during the event (1.71 meters), hoping for a high starting score. Had she gone lower, it would have meant less points than she wanted, but not a zero.

Hawkins’ chances of medaling in the heptathlon are nearly gone after her high-jump miscues

Hawkins was able to change the height of the high jump after the first two failed attempts but declined to do so.

In addition to wiping the tears from her face, Hawkins can be seen visibly shaking while looking up at the scoreboard and seeing a zero next to her name for the high jump.

‘Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, I don’t even know what do to,’ Hawkins can be heard saying on-camera. ‘I’m like literally so shocked right now. No, no, no, no!’

Hawkins personal best at any heptathlon event is 6456 points, set earlier this year.

A zero means she will get nowhere close to her best, with much tougher competition.

Hawkins did score 1100 points during the heptathlon’s first event, the 110-meter hurdles, to get out to a strong start.

While Hawkins had others comforting her after the high jump, she knows her road to medaling is now incredibly tough.
