NBA: Combine Bronny James talks to the media during the 2024 NBA combine

Despite being the son of one of the greatest basketball players, hoops was not Bronny James’ go-to career choice. While radiating the criticism he faces daily due to being LeBron James’ son, Bronny briefly shared the different sports he participated in during his childhood days.

When asked if he always felt a calling for the hardwood, the 19-year-old shook his head with a nostalgic twinkle and said:

“Nah. I mean I played other sports. I played soccer. Wasn’t allowed to play football by mom, didn’t allow that,” Bronny shared.

Bronny’s comment radiates a distinct childhood from his father. LeBron James, before forging his starry path in the NBA, was actively involved in football. LeBron played as a wide receiver for the St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Fighting Irish team. Recruited by a few Division I programs, James was often labeled as a natural NFL talent as he spearheaded his squad to the state semifinals as a junior.

Bronny James did not share the reason behind his mom’s staunch stance against football. However, it can mostly stem from the injury-prone nature of the sport, which can cut the potential of a young athlete’s caliber.

Moreover, Bronny’s statement falls in line with LeBron James’ 2014 interview with Chris Broussard. Playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers at the time, James shared that his kids only partake in baseball, soccer and basketball, and have strict limitations on football.

Bronny James believes he has a quarterback’s touch

Despite the measures put in by his parents, just like his father, Bronny has a deep admiration for the gridiron. His love for football was on full display when he was recovering from his cardiac episode last year.

In September 2023, Bronny was asked about the position he would take on the field if he played football. Without any hesitation, Bronny replied:

“I would probably play like QB. I got a good arm man. I can read defense and stuff . I’d probably play QB,” James said.

The instance occurred as James was cheering for his USC football squad during a game against Nevada, Bronny James then proceeded to mount a t-shirt into the stands to back up his claims, albeit to simply showcase his form.
