This is what the WNBA standings currently look like: seven of the top eight teams have secured their playoff spots, but the eighth spot is still up for grabs. The teams ranked 8th through 11th are all contenders for that final playoff position. LA is no longer eligible for the playoffs, and Dallas would be eliminated today if they lost. At the top, the New York Liberty holds the number one spot with a 98% chance of securing the top seed, according to ESPN analytics.

Monica, when you look at these standings and how the playoff picture is shaping up, what stands out to you?

“Well, I think the New York Liberty are in a ‘do or die’ situation this year. They’ve been playing great, with four players scoring in double digits, and Sabrina Ionescu has really stepped up her game. However, due to contracts, if they don’t get it done this year, their future may be uncertain. But I have to say, if I had to pick a standout team from the standings, it’s the Minnesota Lynx. They haven’t gotten the respect they deserve, but Napheesa Collier is having an incredible season as their leader.”

“The Lynx are also getting significant contributions from their bench, especially in rebounding and shooting percentage. Despite only returning five players from last year, coach Cheryl Reeve made key moves, including signing Alanna Smith and picking up Myisha Hines-Allen. Last year, Minnesota lost to Connecticut in the playoffs because they lacked depth in the frontcourt. Now, with these additions, they have a four-player rotation in the post, making them a dangerous team.”

What’s interesting down the stretch is that Minnesota could finish anywhere from first to fifth, which means there won’t be any time to rest. Teams at the top will have to keep battling. As Monica mentioned, bench productivity will be crucial, especially with injuries like the one Asia Wilson is dealing with.

Carolyn, when you look at the teams ranked 5th through 7th — Seattle, Indiana, and Phoenix — which team do you think the top contenders should worry about the most?

“I think the Indiana Fever are a real problem right now. Caitlin Clark has made incredible strides, adapting to the pace of the game, and her teammates have gotten comfortable playing with her. Her court vision is unmatched, and now her teammates are ready to catch the ball and make plays. My favorite part of her game is the behind-the-back passes — it’s so smooth! And let’s not forget Aaliyah Boston, who has been a fantastic complement to Clark. Together, they’ve become the second-best scoring duo in the league, behind only A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young.”

Since the All-Star break, the Fever have been playing with joy, and it shows in their chemistry. Kelsey Mitchell has been on fire, averaging 25 points per game in August and continuing that form in September. Lexie Hull’s defensive presence in the starting lineup is also key. Indiana is a team no one wants to face right now. We all agree — the Fever are dangerous!
